5. Spelling
Online spelling practice for the whole school + extensive printable resources
Spelling is a crucial component of successful writing. Confidence in spelling enhances overall literacy skills.
Research shows a strong connection between spelling and abilities in reading, writing and comprehension.
Fast Phonics, our systematic synthetic phonics program, incorporates spelling instruction into every lesson.
Students learn the graphemes and phonemes, how to blend them to form words and how to segment words for spelling.
Both Reading Eggs and Reading Eggspress offer spelling components, enabling teachers to assign specific spelling lessons just like they do with reading lessons.
The Skills Bank serves as the spelling resource in Reading Eggs, featuring:
- 96 spelling lessons (32 per grade year)
- Spelling lists that concentrate on word families and high-frequency words
- Skills Bank lessons that encompass eight activities and a spelling test.
Note: Students take a placement test when they first enter the Skills Bank and access is granted only after they complete reading lesson 40.
In addition, you'll find printable resources for Skills Bank lessons including a variety of practice worksheets.
Access to these resources is available through the ‘Student PDF’ and ‘Teacher PDF’ options in the dropdown menu within the ‘Lessons’ section of the teacher console.
Note: Teachers can find the spelling lists in the Reading Eggs user guide under ‘Quick Links’ in the teacher console.
The spelling lessons in Reading Eggspress are located in the English Skills area.
Included in the English Skills area are:
- 216 spelling lessons (36 per grade level)
- Spelling lists that emphasize spelling patterns and conventions
- Three levels of difficulty per grade level
- Lesson printables, available in ‘Student PDF’ resources.
Note: Students do NOT take a placement test in the English Skills area. They're automatically placed in the set associated with their grade level.
The online English Skills interface provides an introduction to the words and instructional videos.
Students then answer 20 questions, interspersed with a spelling game after every five questions.
Lastly, students take a spelling test and receive feedback on their performance, along with practice focusing on tricky words.
Teacher Tip: Assign the same spelling lesson to the whole class each week. Incorporate the weekly spelling words into your Word Walls and other activities and discussions throughout the week.
